In commemoration of International Working Women’s Day, gender rights advocates memorialized the historical struggles of all women worldwide, vowing to continue their legacy in resisting imperialism, macho-feudal system, and economic oppression for a more equitable future.

GABRIELA – Southern Mindanao Secretary-General Rose Hayahay pointed out that the rights currently enjoyed by women stemmed from a protracted fight for social justice and human dignity.

GABRIELA Youth – Davao Chairperson Allyssa Ancheta mirrored Hayahay’s statements, elaborating that historical experiences continued to shape women’s disposition today, which ranged from instances of militarization to countless cases of exploitation.

Ancheta mentioned.

She also denounced Quezon City 4th District Representative Bong Suntay’s lewd remarks towards actress Anne Curtis-Smith, emphasizing that gender-based violence continues to occur because its “number one violator” sits in positions of power.

Ateneo 4 Palestine (A4P) – Davao Convener Allena Sofia de Castro slammed the imperialistic actions of the United States (US) and Israel in Latin America, the Middle East, and even in the Philippines itself, which resulted in irreversible consequences concerning innocent human lives in exchange for maintaining their global hegemony.

“Makakita no sa anumang sulok sa mundo mapa Iran, Lebanon, Palestine, Venezuela, o kahit man sa Pilipinas lantaran ang paglabag sa karapatang pantao ng imperyalistang US at Israel… 1,332 na ang katao ang namatay dahil sa puspusan pangbobomba ng US at Israel kabilang na dito ang pagpatay sa mahigit 165 na batang babae sa Minab all girls school.”

She further condemned Israel’s systemic and institutional use of gender-based violence as a means of warfare in the continued persecution and perpetuation of the genocide, specifically against Palestinian women.

“Sa panahon ng giyera no, mas napatindi pa ang gender-based violence o GBV na siyang manipestasyon na tinatawag nating double oppression ng mga kababaihan, ayon sa ulat ng Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian; systematikong ginagamit ng Israel ang sekswal at reproductive at iba pang GBV laban sa Palestino,” de Castro explained.

Sabokahan Unity of Lumad Women Vice Chairperson Kat Dalon underscored that women in Lumad communities also continue to struggle for liberation from traditional practices that undermine their personal autonomy.

Through a spoken-word poetry performance, Lawig Bubai Chaiperson Lory Pabunag highlighted the experiences of women who choose to stand for the truth despite redtagging and repression from the government.

The “International Working Women’s Day 2026: Kababayen-an, Makibisog! Isalikway ug Panubagon ang Korap, Palisod, ug pasistang Rehimeng US-Marcos-Duterte!” arose at Freedom Park in Roxas Avenue, Davao City, on March 8.
