As numerous corruption allegations fill the news headlines, progressive groups led by Kilusang Mayo Uno – Southern Mindanao Region (KMU-SMR) call for accountability and justice in response to misappropriation of public funds, lack of transparent investigations into anomalies, and worsening conditions of the labor sector.
Kilusang Mayo Uno – Southern Mindanao Region (KMU – SMR) Spokesperson Jeffry Uypala pointed out that acts of grave misconduct and graft under the Marcos administration have come at the expense of ordinary Filipinos, especially the working class.
He urged the workers to take a stand in the face of exploitation, worsening joblessness, stagnant wages, and increasing poverty.
Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT-Teachers) – Davao Region Secretary General Pillar Barredo shared the pleas of the educators on the lack of access to proper supplies and support from the government, which has been an obstacle in efforts to provide quality education to Filipino students.
Referring to the 125 million confidential funds that were drained over the course of 11 days, she highlighted that the funds allocated would have been better spent on learning essentials that students can use in their day-to-day education.
Kadamay – Davao Chair Emeritus Leon “Tatay Toto” Bolcan revealed the lived realities of those below the poverty threshold, specifying that corruption is one of the main reasons for its aggravation.
Bayan Muna – Southern Mindanao Regional Coordinator Rauf Sisay slammed the rampant and systemic corruption committed by the traditional politicians, bureaucratic capitalists, and political dynasties, and underscored that the lives and livelihoods of Filipinos are at stake.
As jeepney drivers express concerns over the effect of the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project, Anakbayan – Southern Mindanao Region Chairperson Fauzhea Guiani explained that the project will displace and deprive the local transport sector of its daily livelihood.
Guiani clamored for the creation of a pro-people, pro-poor council that serves and reflects the needs of ordinary people.
“Atong iduso ang atong panawagan sa usa ka people’s transitional council,” she added.
The Black Friday Protest was held on November 21 at Freedom Park, Roxas Avenue.
