After failing to secure a consecutive victory last year, the Accountancy (ACC) Griffins’ women’s volleyball team reclaimed their gold medal in the Palarong Atenista 2025 championship match against the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) Tigers, 3-1.
The ACC Griffins stumbled early with a series of service errors, allowing SEA Tigers to build an early lead in the first half of the first set, but the former eventually took over with a three-point advantage, 25-22.
In the second set, the ACC Griffins’ defense faltered as the SEA Tigers established a spate of powerful hits and gained a significant number of points due to the former’s service errors, concluding with a nine-point gap at 16-25.
However, the ACC Griffins regained their momentum in the third set when they caught up with the opposing team at 9-9. The SEA Tigers then crumbled under pressure with multiple service errors, allowing ACC Griffins to close out the set at 25-19.
In the fourth and final set, the SEA Tigers initially took the lead, but the ACC Griffins quickly closed it at 7-7 after the SEA Tigers’ consecutive service errors extended the gap, letting the ACC Griffins secure the set and match at 25-17.
ACC Griffins’ team captain Mikaelle Ann Maranan highlighted their strategic move to put open spiker Allea Wong into the court for the last service to secure their victory.
“I know that her serve will really go inside and will really make an impact towards the other team. So that’s when we really claimed it na, ‘Sa amin na ‘to,’” she said.
Maranan also added that the team’s struggle with chemistry in the lead-up matches, but it was eventually solved through improving communication and finding the optimal rotation during the sets.
“We were fixing our rotation, we were trying to find what’s the best rotation na mag-work talaga during the game. So yun ang aming biggest problem. After, na-solve naman namin yun with our rotation, na-apply namin sa aming championship game.”
Settling for silver is last year’s bronze medal holder, the SEA Tigers, while last year’s gold medalists School of Nursing (SON) Panthers took bronze.
The women’s volleyball championship game was held at the 7F Martin Hall last October 9.
