Beating last year’s champion, the Social Science (SS) Dragons brought home the gold medal over the Accountancy (ACC) Griffins through a 2-0 win in the Palarong Atenista 2024 Men’s Scrabble tournament.
SS Dragons’ Cian Athen Sy held an early lead, winning the first round with a score of 312 – 276. The Dragons’ bet then maintained this momentum in the second round with a score of 312 – 286 in the final match.
Sy, who had previously lost to ACC Griffins’ Adriel Lubugun in the elimination rounds, expressed his joy after having a chance to redeem himself in the latter part of the competition.
“He was my first opponent… I didn’t count the scores correctly, so I thought I won, but I already lost. So, yeah, and it’s amazing because we get to meet each other again and I get to finally beat him. And he’s such a great opponent,” Sy said.
Sy also shared the preparations they undertook for their upcoming matches by spending a lot of time practicing with his coach and the SS women’s representative.
“For weeks, we went every Monday and Wednesday, we’d practice… us three, our coach, and the women’s rep… we’d play like one or two games every few days or so,” he shared.
Sy also acknowledged the challenges of balancing his practices for the tournament with his academic responsibilities.
The final standing of the Scrabble Cup placed the Accountancy (ACC) Griffins in second place, while the Humanities and Letters (HUMLET) Wolves came in third place.
The championship match was held in room F213, Finster Building, on September 15.
