Dominating their way in the championship match by winning the first 3 sets, the Social Sciences (SS) Dragons claimed their first-ever podium and gold against the two-time champion Business and Management (BM) Vipers in the Palarong Atenista 2024 volleyball finals, securing a 3-0 victory.
During the first set, the SS Dragons controlled the game early, overpowering the BM Vipers by their powerful attacks and precise coordination leading to a commanding ten-point lead, 25-15.
BM Vipers’ started strong in the second set with their sharp counter-tactics, penetrating the defense of the SS Dragons that allowed the Vipers to gain an early advantage.
Challenged, the SS Dragons remained focused, executing dynamic combinations and impressive comebacks, narrowly clinching the set with a narrow 23-25 finish.
The third set saw both teams engaged in intense rallies and persistent moves, with the score shifting and the teams remaining neck and neck, but the SS Dragons edged their opponent with their robust defense, claiming the set 25-23 and sealing the match victory.
SS Dragons Captain Kai Ronan Catacutan, libero, reflected on the team’s performance throughout the eliminations, emphasizing their commitment to winning each game.
“The turning point of our play was during the third set when we had a timeout to compose ourselves and talk about how we should perform inside the court,” Catacutan said.
Prior to the championship game, their overall preparation for the Palaro involved scheduled training during their free time and constant communication on gameplay strategies.
“The most challenging aspect of competing this season is facing the crowd of other clusters because most of them have many fans and supporters, while we, in SS, are only small,” Catacutan expressed.
The BM Vipers settled in second place, followed by the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA), which placed third.
The volleyball championship game was held last September 26 at 7F Martin Hall.
