“Mag-aral maglingkod, mangahas na makibaka. LFS tunay, palaban, makabayan.”
This was the clarion shout of the students from different chapters of the League of Filipino Students in Davao City during their 37th year anniversary celebration yesterday, September 11 at Freedom Park, Roxas Avenue. In line with this, members held a protest rally to reiterate their bold stand against various forms of US Imperialism and other related social issues.
Clint Caesar Juaban, a member of League of Filipino Students, expressed the stand of the organization against the United States’ Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), an agreement between the Philippines and the US which is envisions to advance the implementation of the Philippine-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT).
“Kini usa ka porma nga pagsulod sa imperyalistang Estados Unidos as atong nasud. Para masiguro ang ilang pag-colonize, pagsakop sa Pilipinas. Ang EDCA usa ka balaod nga dili makatao, dili maka-Pilipino ug grabe pagpahimulos sa katawhang Pilipino. Laliman ka ang mga warship sa US muanhi diri sa Pilipinas kita pa ang magpatubil. Kita pa ang magmaintain.”
Alexander Balili, a former LFS leader, also gave a solidarity message. He thanked the youth and highlighted their role in propagating the real state of the nation.
“Nagpasalamat ako sa mga kabatan-onan nga ania karon nga nagpadayon sa pakigbisog, walay kahago, walay puas sa pagpursigi sa pagpropaganda sa tinuud na kahimtang sa atong nasod. Kay ingon nga mga estudyante, sila ang pinakaimportanteng sektor sa atong katilingban aron mubalita, musabwag, sa tinuud nga sitwasyon sa atong katilingban.”
LFS spokesperson Juno Marteen Vegas ended the protest rally by summarizing their stand on issues such as EDCA, human rights violations, red-tagging incidents of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), tuition fee increase, and low salary of teachers and workers.
“Ug ang League of Filipino Students sa 37 years niya na pagtumaw bilang isang lehitimong organisasyon nagpadayon sa pagyambo tungod hangtod wala mawala kining mga problema nato sa agrarian reform, ang problema nato sa tuition fee, ang problema sa atong magsasaka ug mangingisda, mga teacher , naa gihapon ang League of Filipino students,” he said.
He ended his speech by encouraging the youth to join the league.
“Gani, ginaawhag ko ang tanang estudyante nga mag-apil ug LFS. Ang League of Filipino Students dili makadaut sa inyong kinabuhi, busa makatabang pa kini sa atong pagpalambo isip estudyante . Ug estudyante dili tua sa mga kapitalista, estudyante para sa masa ug para sa interes sa tinuud nga kagawasan niining Pilipinas.”
The League of Filipino Students (LFS) is a national democratic mass organization that was conceived on September 11, 1977. With a socialist perspective, it fights against imperialism, feudalism and bureaucratic-capitalism.
