Champs Once Again

Lady Vipers edge out Lady Griffins

I t was an energetic atmosphere inside the Almendras Gym as the crowd witnessed the championship basketball game between the Accountancy Lady Griffins and last year’s champions, the Business and Management Lady Vipers.

The Lady Vipers were on a quest to defend their women’s basketball crown for this year’s Palarong Atenista as they faced an opponent they knew very well.

The Lady Griffins were hungry to play and they had the desire to beat another opponent in order to reach their goal of grabbing their championship.

Right from the opening tip, it became a competitive and close match as both teams played tough defense against one another and exchanged key baskets for both teams.

The crowd from both the Business and Management Division and the Accountancy Division cheered as loud as they can for their respective teams as the game grew much more intense.

By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Vipers took a four point lead, 24-20, over the Lady Griffins.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Griffins went on a 4-0 run as they were able to convert two field goals courtesy of Abella and Gonzales to tie the game at 24-24 with 6:36 remaining in the ball game.

But the Lady Vipers answered back quickly and went on a 6-0 run with key baskets converted from Salcedo and Alindao to take a 30-24 lead with 4:36 remaining in the ball game.

The Lady Griffins tried to keep the game close but they struggled to hit key baskets in order to make the game much closer.

The Lady Griffins were also struggling to handle the basketball as the Lady Vipers played tight defense against them.

The Lady Vipers were able to capitalize on their key defensive stops with two more baskets being converted by Nulla and Salcedo.

With the score of 34-30 and with around 30 seconds remaining, the Lady Vipers were in a desperate need of a basket to seal the game for good.

Nulla provided the shot the Lady Vipers desperately needed as she hits a tough floater over the defense of the Lady Griffins in the waning seconds of the ball game.

The players of the Lady Vipers on the bench began to celebrate as they started to smell victory over the Lady Griffins.

Once the referees blew their whistles and signaled the end of the game, it was all clear. The Lady Vipers remained on top and still retained their women’s basketball crown with a six-point victory over the Lady Griffins with the final score of 36-30.

The B&M crowd became jubilant as they witnessed their women’s basketball team once again won the championship game and still remained as champions for this year’s Palarong Atenista.

After the championship game, Eric Dulay, coach of the Lady Vipers, shared his winning strategy which eventually led them to the championship.

“Accepting their own roles, kasi each and every one of the players have their own roles. They have to defend, they have to score, and they have to pass,” Dulay said.

When asked about the clutch shot by Nulla in the waning seconds of the game, Dulay answered, “It was a sign na jud. Celebrate na mi.”

For the players of the Lady Vipers, they were very happy and satisfied as they once again hailed as champions of women’s basketball after a hard-fought game against the Lady Griffins.

Nulla was the leading scorer for the Lady Vipers as she finishes with 10 points along with two rebounds and three steals. While Salcedo contributed with nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

Gamorot was the leading scorer for the Lady Griffins as she scores with 10 points on 4/6 shooting from the field in a valiant effort during the championship match. While Gonzales added six points and grabbed five rebounds.
