The gong was once again rung and the torch lit, as students from their respective divisions flocked yesterday night at the Fr. Martinez Sports Complex, AdDu Matina Campus, to witness the opening rites of the Palarong Atenista 2015.

This year’s theme of “Moving further towards a culture of collaboration through sports” hopes to imbibe unto students the true value of teamwork and camaraderie.

The night started with the introduction of each division as they walked up the ramp while carrying their respective flags. Shortly after, the representatives for the Pair Dance Showdown gave the audience a sneak peek of what was to come later in the evening by performing a portion of their routine.

Coach Noli Ayo was also present and delivered an inspirational message to the crowd, sharing his experiences with AdMU star athletes Kiefer Ravena and Alyssa Valdez during last year’s Heart Strong games.

His touching story was subsequently followed by the lighting of the torch by the AdDU men’s basketball team captain Eric Dulay, several division representatives, and the Blue Knight mascot. The taking of the Oath of Sportsmanship and the banner raising contest, which was won by the Natural Science and Mathematics cluster, followed afterwards.

The highlight of the night was the Pair Dance Showdown, in which each team delivered their own rendition of the lives of famous athletes through creative dance routines. And for the second year in a row, the Accountancy Griffins won over the crowd and the gold medal with their portrayal of soccer megastars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Business and Management Vipers and the Computer Studies Chameleons came in second and third place, respectively.

Hostesses Patricia Labella and Glorietta De Guia brightened the mood of the crowd with their enthusiasm while intermission numbers from the Ateneo Dance Theatre and Distinct Feature all helped in making the event nothing short of entertaining.

“Being a student athlete means more than simply being a player for your division. It means a lot of hard work, discipline, and unwavering passion for the sport that you love. With that, I hope the effort of the players will pay off. Make friends, create memorable experiences, and most importantly, enjoy every minute of the game,” said AdDU Athletics head Bemi Garcia Jr.

The games will take place at the Fr. Martinez sports complex and the AdDU Annex starting Nov. 22, 2015 up to Jan. 23, 2016.
